Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

The Diary of Anne Frank

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.”—Anne Frank

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Walter Dean Myers
J. K. Rowling
Kelly Barnhill

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I wrote my first fiction story in the fourth grade. I wrote a story through the eyes of an ant. Raindrops became water bombs and the soles of feet were terrifying. It was exciting to look at my world through this new perspective. I fell in love with writing and haven’t stopped writing since.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Write a first draft with a pen and paper. It allows you time to think as you shape each letter, each word. It is a powerful feeling writing a story down in ink.
