Michelle Shapiro’s whimsical characters and beautiful colors have appeared in many publications around the country including The New York Times and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. She is the illustrator of Rebecca’s Journey Home, a Sydney Taylor Honor award winner. She lives with her family in Santa Barbara, CA.

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?
My favorite illustrators are Maira Kalman and Giselle Potter
Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?
From the time I could hold a pencil I have always love to create and draw. Illustrations can be so powerful, and crafted properly, illustrations can actually enhance the beauty of the written word.
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
My advice would be: When you discover an artist or illustrator that enchants you, really look closely and examine the work. Ask yourself: What about it holds your attention? Is it the color, line, style? Be conscience of what you notice and then take that information and develop your own unique expression.
