Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)
“What do garbage collectors do? Readers will find out with this addition to the “Sesame Street Loves Community Helpers” series. It shares the role of garbage collectors in making the city a better place to live. They do more than just pick up trash; they also gather recycling and yard waste and take it specific places. Collecting garbage is a dangerous task and garbage collectors must do particular things to keep themselves safe while doing their job, including unique wearing clothing, gloves, and eye protection. Readers also learn about the parts of the trucks used to collect garbage including the arms (that pick-up bins). In each of the books in this series, the well-known furry friends help young readers understand the contributions of many of the community helpers they might see in their own neighborhood. The Sesame Street characters are included throughout. At the end of the book is a thank you note which encourages a follow-up for the reader of the text. Includes several elements of informational texts, including a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a read more section with additional books connected to this topic. The glossary is user-friendly and includes pictures to help readers make meaning of the terms. A good selection for elementary units on community helpers, employment, or communities.
