“High school students Eli and Freddy are tired of being bullied by classmate Nolan. To avoid him on their way home from school one afternoon, they take a shortcut home through a no-trespassing development area. There, they are stunned by the sudden appearance of a sinkhole in the city. As they escape the area, the boys suddenly find a coin minted in 1890. Strange things start to happen. Eli has weird dreams and gains fame and recognition for his science fair project. He decides to go back through the off-limits area a few more times. There, he finds a pocket watch and a gold chain. As he acquires each item, weird occurrences continue to happen to him and the city. Are these items cursed? This fast-paced book is part of the “Sinkhole” series. Each book centers around the different experiences of teenagers within the community of Foggy Creek after the sinkhole suddenly appears. The fourteen chapters of this work of realistic fiction include representations of bullying, unique family structures, and friendships.
