“Part of a series of board books that introduces young children to various sports, this title focuses on hockey. Like the other titles in the series, this action-filled and engaging book features dinosaur athletes. The dinosaurs on both teams look hungry for a win, as appropriate for the fast and competitive nature of the sport. The adult reader will appreciate the brief text, which works well given the attention span of the intended audience. While the words are few, they offer opportunities to build language and vocabulary. The author includes words like puck, helmet, goalie, and nimble in the text. Alliteration is utilized throughout to support sound awareness growth. Fans of hockey may recognize favorite teams among the color of the jerseys. Reading this book to a young child is a wonderful way to build background knowledge, subject-specific vocabulary, sound awareness, and concepts of print. There is much of value in these short texts.
