“What are some ways to help an injured friend? Author Borgert-Spaniol provides readers with several suggestions in this story. Ben has an injury that requires support, and readers can find out about what kind of support is provided. The text does not focus only on Ben receiving help but also includes how he helps. The characters are shown in the text to be diverse, with varied races and genders represented within the school setting. This text is a part of the “I Care” series of leveled texts. These texts allow readers to explore ways to function within the world. Although this is a single text within the set, the full set of readers pairs both fiction and non-fiction texts so readers have equal access to those genres from, an early age. As a level B text, this book uses repetition of single lines that match the action in the illustrations. The text supports nascent readers by allowing them to use the pictures to help read the story.
