Nareissa Smith is a freelance writer, lawyer, and former law professor. During her twelve years as a law professor, she taught courses in Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure, Critical Race Theory, and Women and the Law. Because of her background, her writing focuses on legal issues impacting communities of color and women of color. She is based in North Carolina.

Before I was an author, I was a teacher. Writers—all writers, but especially those who write non-fiction—are also teachers. Our readers are our students, and our pages are our classrooms.
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
I have two pieces of advice.
#1—Believe in yourself. You can do it!
#2—Don’t wait! If you have an idea that you are passionate about, start putting it on the page now. You can do it!
