Interview
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
A series of baseball books called Rookies by Mark Freeman.
What’s your favorite line from a book?
“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.” –from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?
Tom Perrotta, Richard Price, Cormac McCarthy, John Green
Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?
I’ve always written, and seeing my words in print and enjoyed by others gives me the biggest sense of professional accomplishment I’ve ever found.
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
Just get the words on paper. You can take something mediocre, or even bad, and fix it once it’s there, and it exists, on paper (or the screen). Also, find a time of day to write and stick to it. Very early in the morning works for me.
