Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

The earliest books I remember having any particular affinity for were the Sweet Valley High books. While they weren’t exactly mirror books for me, they were full of drama!

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

I honestly cannot narrow it down to three! I do love the work of Floyd Cooper, Carole Boston Weatherford, and Vanessa Brantley-Newton. Plus every one of Kevin Henkes’ mouse books!

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

My goal has always been to influence kids to be more kind, confident, and considerate human beings, as that is the type of citizenry this world is desperately in need of.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Read extensively and analytically. Create honestly and consistently. Do not give up.
