Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

Can’t remember the title as I had to hide to read it, usually in the dark! The cover was always hidden, by blankets, other books, cereal boxes…It was about a magical tree and magic was forbidden in my house. We came from a respected line of preachers and bootleggers.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“There is much to be learned from the beasts.” – Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I’m in dog rescue; it gets quoted inappropriately a lot.

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Katherine Applegate, Ally Carter, Erik Larson

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

To write the book I couldn’t find on a shelf anywhere.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

I founded a mentoring program for young authors (middle school-high) and I say: KEEP GOING. FINISH. IGNORE THE VOICE THAT SAYS YOU CAN’T. REPEAT.
