Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

I Saw Esau by Iona and Peter Opie, illustrated by Maurice Sendak

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Kate Beaton, Jillian Tamaki, Naoko Takeuchi

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I’ve been telling stories with my drawings and writing ever since I can remember, and realizing I could do both words and pictures with comics changed my life. I wanted to make books about the kinds of characters that I didn’t see often in media, characters in which I could truly see myself.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Don’t let yourself get trapped in the planning and thinking stages of making stories. Just jump right in and get writing and drawing! The more stories you tell, the better you’ll get at it.
