Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

When I was little, I was frankly obsessed with The Witches, by Roald Dahl.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“The road to hell is paved with unbought stuffed dogs.”

Look, I’m not even a big Hemingway fan, but that’s a real, actual line from The Sun Also Rises, and I think it’s hilarious!

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I’m not sure that there was ever a really concrete reason, except that writing was what I did whenever I was left to my own devices. If people were watching, I did a lot of other things, but if I was alone, I was almost always writing stories.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Make the art or write the stories that only you can deliver. Your version of what someone else is doing is never going to be as awesome as your version of what you can do.
