Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

Trixie Belden books

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”― Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who!

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Shel Silverstein, Mother Teresa, Dr. Suess

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I always liked to write, even when I was a child. I particularly liked writing non-fiction. When my friend and co-author, Dr. Dennis Denenberg, shared with me his commitment to teaching children about REAL heroes, I jumped at the chance to bring those heroes to life by writing their stories. Once I started the project, I was HOOKED! It thrills me to see young learners dive into the lives of great people who were once kids just like them. My work as an author is changing lives, and that makes me incredibly proud! And I have learned so much in the process!

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

For young authors—keep at it. Write about what brings you joy. If you are stuck while working on a project (some people call this “writer’s block”), just keep writing. Words. Thoughts. Phrases. ANYTHING! It will all come together. Have patience. Have courage. Have fun!
