Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

There is no way I could pick a favorite! But I loved the Trixie Belden mysteries.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“Let the wild rumpus start!”

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Jane Austen, Michael Crichton, Julia Child (yes, cookbooks because cooking is chemistry!)

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I’ve always loved to draw and write, but I did much better in math and science while I was in school. When I became a scientist, I was pleasantly surprised that one of my major duties was to write up my research results. I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to write!

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Write about what you know. A children’s editor once said that to me at a conference and so I started focus my writing on science for children.  Editors started to notice.
