Carol Hand

Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” – Gandalf, in The Fellowship of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Loree Griffin Burns, J.K. Rowling, Laurie Halse Anderson (favorite YA authors).

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

Since I was very young, I have been concerned about environmental problems. I feel it is extremely important for young people to learn about these problems so they will be prepared to help solve them. I write books to help them learn.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Start young. Write about something you are passionate about. Keep writing.
