Interview
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
I don’t remember the name of it, but I remember well the little, somewhat raggedy overused book of many short stories. All of the illustrations were in black and white.
What’s your favorite line from a book?
“No one comes into a culture, without someone having paid a heavy price.”—James Baldwin
Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?
Alice Walker, Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes
Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?
I enjoy illustrating because, it is exciting for me to add the punctuation to a story. My colorful palette and rhythmic style tends to translate well into the visuals for young readers.
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
Just to enjoy the work! If you can relate in any way to your subject, you tend to bring your best to the project.
