Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

I loved so many! Where the Sidewalk Ends was a favorite I often reread. And I still love books by Mercer Mayer.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

The most recent one that comes to mind is “I’m a pout-pout fish/With a pout-pout face,/So I spread the dreary-wearies/All over the place” from The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen. I laughed out loud when I first read it!

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Dr. Seuss, Mercer Mayer, and Nancy Tillman

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

Since I was very young, I have always loved everything about books: reading them, writing them, and drawing pictures. Working on children’s books is just so much fun; I feel like I get to live out a favorite hobby every day.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Don’t ever give up! Take internships, read newly-published books to stay on top of market trends and styles, and have patience if you don’t make it right away. It will all be worth it if you end up doing what you love in the end!
