Interview
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
Sydney Taylor’s All-of-a-Kind Family
What’s your favorite line from a book?
“The woods were silent except for the screaming.”—M. T. Anderson
Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?
After reading Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist, I realized I’d been writing my whole life. But writing the eulogy for my father’s funeral in 1997 taught me that I had things to say and writing was the way I needed to express them.
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
Be consistent. Be persistent. Persevere even when you think you shouldn’t.
