Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

I’d be hard pressed to pick just one. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH left an impression on me, and Brian Jacques’ Redwall series filled my head with adventure through much of middle school. I also really enjoyed Paul Jenning’s short stories.

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Right now, I’m adoring Shaun Tan. Also, Arthur Rackham’s illustrations are just magical. Bill Watterson has been a favorite since childhood.

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I suppose at the heart of it, I want to recreate the sense of awe and inspiration in kids that I felt as a kid.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Nothing worth doing is easy.
