Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor

What’s your favorite line from a book?

From The Lotus Seed by Sherry Garland: "It is the flower of life and hope, my grandmother said. No matter how ugly the mud or how long the seeds lie dormant, the bloom will be beautiful."

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Patricia Pollacco, Sharon Creech, Kevin Henkes

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I wanted to tell stories that would touch people and make them feel connected to others.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Always carry an idea notebook—you never know when you’ll be inspired. Don’t ever tell yourself that your ideas are no good—always allow room in your head for creativity without judgement.
