Kathleen Kemly grew up in Michigan and went to college in NYC. Now she lives in beautiful Seattle with her husband, dogs, cats and chickens.

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey was among many favorites.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“Munchy crunchy, my dear snackers, you will love our crumbly crackers,” and, “Do you like my hat?”

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Favorite illustrators: Jim LaMarche, Jerry Pinkney, and Paul Zelinsky—among many, many others.

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

My third grade teacher, Mrs. Burchett, had us all write, illustrate, and build our own books. From then on, I was hooked!

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Read, write, and draw all of the time.
