Lisa Wheeler is the award-winning author of the Dino-Sports books. When she isn’t running around the country visiting schools, standing at podiums, and eating airport snacks, she resides in Michigan.
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
- Humbug Witch by Lornia Balian
What’s your favorite line from a book?
Just one? Well, there are so many, but a family favorite is from Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell. If I ask one of my kids, “How goes the work?” they know the only answer is “Quack!” If they don’t answer “Quack!” then that is our signal that their brain has been taken over by aliens.
Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?
Barbara Cooney, Phyllis Root, Cynthia Rylant
Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?
- I’ve been writing since I was a kid and always enjoyed it. It was my hobby, a fun thing to do. Much of what I wrote was geared to kids, but it wasn’t until I worked in a children’s book department that I decided I would like to share my stories with everyone—not just my children. I have never regretted taking the first step!
Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?
Work on your craft. Kids deserve our best and anyone who thinks it is easy to write a kid’s book has never tried and succeeded. The good news is, if you love writing for kids, and it is your passion, work is fun!
