Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

Charlotte’s Web

What’s your favorite line from a book?

From Charlotte’s Web: “It’s not often someone comes along that’s a true friend and a good writer.”

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Sadie Wallerstein, Tomie DePaola, Howard Norman (The Girl Who Dreamed Only Geese), Leo and Diane Dillon (illustrators)

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I come from a family that loves words. My brother and uncle write poetry. My grandfather was and my sister and mother still are great punsters. My dad wrote beautiful letters at a time when people still wrote letters! When we were young, my father told teaching tales to my sister, brother and me. Among my favorites were “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “The Blind Men and the Elephant.” I love reading or hearing a story with a good plot that also teaches a lesson. I started writing children’s stories when my own children were young. Once I began writing, the stories just kept flowing!

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Write for the age group you know. Make sure that the story is engaging, compelling or funny for that age. Get constructive feedback. Rewrite. Network. Send it out. Don’t give up.
