Social and Emotional Learning with Sesame Street

SEL (social and emotional learning) is a critical component of education. Prioritizing respect, inclusion, and community awareness are all essential to being a good neighbor. Who better to teach kids these important values than everyone’s favorite, furry friends from Sesame Street?

Lerner has new Sesame Street offerings that foster SEL principles and teach reading skills with inviting text and fun photography. The Sesame Street Field Trips series lets kids visit community hubs like the library, the fire station, and the post office and meet the community helpers who work there. Readers will come away with knowledge of important locations in their community and appreciation for all of the hard work that goes into providing community services. They’ll also learn skills to help them be active members of the community.

In Five-Minute Friendship Starters: A Sesame Street Guide to Making a Friend, kids will find fun questions they can ask to get to know somebody, learn kind words that they can share with others, and discover how to do an online show-and-tell with friends from afar. The activities reinforce the importance of SEL skills like sharing and listening, and the photos feature children of different genders, races, and abilities so that all children see themselves reflected in the book.

Join Lerner and Sesame Street and teach young readers the importance of community and caring. With informative content and a wonderful dash of whimsy, Sesame Street brings fun and joy to cultivating SEL principles!
