Librarians We Love: Tamara Cox

by Lara Neel, Trade Marketing Manager

Tamara Cox is a high school librarian at Wren High School in South Carolina. She was nominated to be a Librarian We Love through our web form. We’re very excited to share some details about her advocacy!

Mrs. Cox has been instrumental in promoting advocacy within her school, our district and across the state. She partners with our county election commission and League of Women Voters to bring in voting booths for a state book award contest. In addition to exposing our students to voting machines, she provides voter registration applications for our eligible students. She created a display that informs students about our local, state, and national elected officials with their contact information and a quiz to help students determine which political party best fits their beliefs.

She collaborates with the Government teacher to bring in our area’s state representative to talk to students about getting involved in local government and voting. She arranged for visits to our district from the state Teacher of the Year and our State Superintendent of Education, in addition to our state and local legislators. She invites them to our schools so that they can see the challenges facing our students and teachers and advocate for more education-friendly policies and laws.

As the chair of our district’s Teacher Forum, Mrs. Cox has helped our teachers become more comfortable with legislative advocacy by leading them in writing postcards to legislators, speaking up at Legislative Delegation meetings in our schools, and visiting our state capitol for an education Hill Day event. Mrs. Cox works with the SC State Library to plan the SC Read In on the statehouse steps and the SC Library Legislative Day with the SC Library Association. She represents the SC Association of School Librarians at the National Library Legislative Day in Washington, DC. These projects are very important with the 2020 election year approaching.

Thanks so much for sharing!
