Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“Isn’t it pretty to think so?”—The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

I like crime/detective fiction, and my favorite writers are Ross Macdonald, Raymond Chandler, and Dashiell Hammett.

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

I like it, I’m good at it, and people pay me to do it. Who could ask for anything more?

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Writing well is just like having a conversation with your reader. Imagine sitting down over a cup of coffee and telling a story about something. If you can write this down, you have a good conversational book. And just keep writing!
