Interview

What was your favorite book when you were a child?

I mostly read wrestling books and magazines as a child. I was not a huge fiction reader. I liked Charlotte’s Web, but there could have been more body slams.

What’s your favorite line from a book?

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman, and a ride home.” That’s the first (and last) line of S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders.

Who are your top three favorite authors or illustrators?

Jon Scieszka, Brian Selznick, and Jacqueline Woodson.

Why did you want to become an author or illustrator?

Because I wanted to share an experience I had (watching wrestling or something from one of my teen novels) with others.

Do you have any advice for future authors or illustrators?

Read your favorite book and then read it again paying attention to HOW the author pulled you into the story.
