Here’s what we’ve got going on.
Free signings at ALA
Saturday
First up, author Mélina Mangal will sign free copies of The Vast Wonder of the World: Biologist Ernest Everett Just from 10:00-10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
This biography features the story of influential yet little-known scientist Ernest Everett Just, who studied sea creatures that revealed new insights about egg cells and the origins of life. With stunning illustrations by illustrator Luisa Uribe, this picture book is not to be missed.
Sunday
Young People’s Poet Laureate Margarita Engle will sign free copies of A Dog Named Haku: A Holiday Story from Nepal from 10:00-10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Co-written with her daughter and son-in-law, this adorable picture book features a story inspired by her son-in-law’s childhood in Nepal. It also introduces the Festival of Lights, an important Hindu holiday.
From 2:00-2:30 p.m., Sarah McGuire will sign free ARCs of her latest middle-grade novel, The Flight of Swans.
This retelling of the Brothers’ Grimm fairy tale Six Swans follows one girl’s journey to save her family from the clutches of an evil stepmother.
“McGuire has the right balance of heroics, poetics, and pratfalls,” said Jane Yolen of The Flight of Swans. “Brava performance!”
Author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson (Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book No Crystal Stair: A Documentary Novel of the Life and Work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller, Carolrhoda Lab™/Lerner) and illustrator Gordon C. James (Newbery Honor Book Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut, Agate Publishing) will sign free posters of their new picture book, Let ‘Er Buck! George Fletcher, the People’s Champion, from 3:00-3:30 p.m.
Let ‘Er Buck! tells the true story of a talented African American cowboy who lost the 1911 Pendleton Round-Up rodeo to a white man. The crowd, outraged at the judges’ decision, named George Fletcher the people’s champion. Grab a free poster at ALA, and look for the book in February 2019.
Next up, from 3:30-4:00 p.m. French comics artist Eve Tharlet will sign free copies of The Wild Cat, the latest title in the Mr. Badger and Mrs. Fox graphic novel series for young readers.
The French Comics Association is hosting a screening of the French cartoon based on the Mr. Badger and Mrs. Fox series at noon on Monday.
Preceding the Mr. Badger and Mrs. Fox showing, at 11:30 a.m. they will screen a cartoon based on the Tib & Tumtum graphic novel series. To learn more about French Comics Association events at ALA, click here.
Monday
Meet Patricia Newman, author of Sibert Honor Book Sea Otter Heroes: The Predators that Saved an Ecosystem, on Monday. She’ll be signing free copies of Sea Otter Heroes from 11:00-11:30 a.m.
